Bayındırlık ve İskan Bakanı – ANKARA - This study is the first part of an investigation aiming to reveal the possibilities of benefits from the Akaraman, Daglic, Chios and Awassi breeds for new high yielding genotype adopted to Afyon conditions by determination of production characteristics of these native breeds in this province.
The study was carried on the 25 Akkaraman, 26 Daglic, 20 Chios, and 21 Awassi sheep maintained at the Afyon Kocatepe University Research Farm during the period 1998 to 2001.
The parturition rates were 80, 100, 88.89% for Akkaraman; 60, 93.75, 76.19 % for Daglic; 86.6, 77.78, 61.54% for Chios; 100, 100, 94.44% for Awassi between 1999 and 2001 years the study conducted. The litter size were also found to be 1.33, 1.33, 1.38; 1.00, 1.06, 1.31; 1.46, 2.14, 2.50; 1.20, 1.08, 1.47 respectively.
The survival rates for first and third months of age in all lambs and for sixth and twelveth month of age in only females were 100, 100, 100, 100% for Akkaraman, 96.55, 96.55, 94.11, 94.11% for Daglic, 71.43, 71.43, 68.42, 68.42% for Chios, 96.55, 89.66, 100, 100% for Awassi.
While the adaptability levels for fertility and survival rate in Chios were medium, the Akkaraman and Awassi breeds well adapted the region under the enough feeding and care conditions, and the conclusion that the fertility traits of these three breeds could be used during developing a new genotype were reached.
