- This study was carried out to determine body weight, some body and head measurements in different age and sex groups of Kangal dogs. The data were collected from 36 dogs raised on a private farm which was operated by the Shepherd Dogs Protection Assosiation in Haymana, Ankara. The effects of age and sex on body weights, some body and head measurements were analysed using least squares method.

The least squares means were 48.24, 55.78, 56.71, 62.24 kg for body weights of 1, 2, 3, 4 years of dogs and 59.93, 51.56 kg for male and female dogs, respectiveley. Least square means of 1, 2, 3, 4 years of dogs were 71.02, 73.42, 73.49 , 75.29 cm for wither heights; 76.49, 79.22, 80.72, 81.49 cm for body lengths; 29.62, 31.22, 31.49, 33.07 cm for chest depths; 23.73, 25.60, 25.66, 27.26 cm for chest widths; 91.25, 94.48, 96.53, 100.18 cm for hearth girths; 14.79, 15.26, 15.54 ve 16.16 cm for front cannon bone circumference; 13.60, 13.78, 14.56 ve 14.73 cm for hind cannon bone circumference, respectevely. The least squares means were 31.57, 33.53, 33.86, 35.03 cm for head length; 15.36, 15.53, 15.60, 16.70 cm for muzzle length; 18.87, 20.10, 20.21, 21.50 cm for ears interval; 7.47, 7.58, 8.19, 8.36 cm for eyes interval, respectively. The effects of sex and age on body weight, body and head measurements were found statistically significant at different levels of probability.

In conclusion, the values obtained in this study were generally higher than those reported. Keywords : Kangal dog, live weight, body measurements, head measurements
