The effects of milk Replacers upon veal Production in Holstein and Brown Swiss male Calves
Milk replacers under the commercial name of spreymes of various compostions were fed to the calves ad libitum.
The animals were individually-penned at the end of feeding period average live weifhts were 156.75 kg. for Swiss Brown calves and 151.8 kg for Holstein calves. Differences of average gains at various stages of feeding periods were found to be statistically significant. At the and of feeding period, average daily gains of groups were estimated as 752 gr and 562.2 gr respectively.
Slaughter weights between hot and cold carcass weights, and in respect to various slaughtering properties such as kidneys fat and mesenterial fat were not found to be significantly different.
The carcass properties of groups at slaughter were as following. Hot cold carcass weighing and MLD squares for Brown Swiss and Holstein calves were 100.0 kg and 93.14 kg; 98.4 kg and 89.7 kg; and 88.47 cnt and 79.04 cm respectively, the dressing percentages were 62.8 % for Brown Swiss calves and 58.9 % for Holstein calves.
