Vitamin C and Ceruloplasmin levels in diarrhea of calves and the effect of vitamin C on the treatment

Veteriner Fakültesi Bakteriyoloji Bilim Dalı, Konya - This study was made in order to show which factors played a role information of diarrhea of calves which was observed in Konya, and on the other hand, to determine serum vitamin C and ceruloplasmin levels of healthy and unhealthy calves, and to investigate the contribution of the vitamin to the treatment.
In this study, 40 calves having neonatal diarrhea (I. and II. experimental groups) and 14 healthy calves (control group) were used. A classical diarrhea treatment was used for the I. experimental group, whereas the same treatment plus 1 g vitamin C was applied via i/m, to the II. experimental group.
In both experimental groups, mean blood serum vitamin C and ceruloplasmin levels were found to be 1.03 and 29.81 mg/dl and those of control group were 0.59 and 21.43 mg/dl. From the point of vitamin C and ceruloplasmin levels, the differences between the groups were significant by P<0.001 and P<0.01, respectively.
It was determined that there were no significant effect of sex and age on blood serum vitamin C and ceruloplasmin levels. Although there were no significant differences between the serum vitamin C levels based on the months in which they have been admitted to the clinics, the differences between the ceruloplasmin levels were found to be Statistically significant (P<0.05).
