- The aim of this study was to determine the some wool properties of Awassi sheep at Ereğli Animal Breeding Research Station in Central Anatolia. The wool samples were taken from hip region just before shearing in 1966-1967 and 1968. The wool characteristics of staple length, fiber diameter, breaking strength, elasticity, types of fiber, percantage of clean fiber were determined with laboratory analyses. Number of records for these properties ranged from 6 to 10 for rams, from 41 to 104 for ewes and from 31 to 44 for yearling, considering each year seperately.

Average values for rams, ewes and yearlings were; 15.9 cm, 14.5 cm and 15.1 cm for staple length; 35.98 micron, 34.97 micron and 33.82 micron for fiber diameter; distribution of fiber feneness ranged from 10 to 160 micron, from 10 to 180 micron and from 10 to 130 micron; 19.9 gr, 17.5 gr and 28.2 gr for absolute fiber strength; 32.0 %, 31.7 % and 32.3 % for elasticity; 75.8, 78.1 and 80.8 % for true fiber; 7.7, 6.1 and 5.1 % for kempy fiber; 8.4, 3.9 and 6.0 % for medullated fiber; 8.1, 11.8 and 8.1 for heterotype fiber; 77.0 %, 71.7 % and 78.2 for clean fiber respectively. Average greasy and clean fleece weight of adult sheep were 2.5 kg and 1.67 kg respectively.

The results indicate that the Awassi wool is suitable for carpet and rug manufacturing. Keywords :
