The possibilities for ıncreasing the mohair yield and the quality for the selection based on face covering effects of Angora goats
2 Dr. Uzm. Vet. Hek. Proje ve Uygulama Gn. Md.lüğü ANKARA - The possibilities for ıncreasing the mohair yield and the quality for the selection based on face covering effects of Angora goats were investigated with this study.
In this investigation, 50 covered face, 50 open face Angora does and 5 covered face, 5 open face Angora bucks were used. The covered face does were inseminated with covered face bucks and open face does were inseminated with open face bucks. The live weight of does before oestrus, the number of kids produced per year and the yield of mohair were recorded and the characters of mohair which were taken from left belly covering region during shearing were analysed.
The live weights of covered and open face Angora goats were 34.53 ± 0.41 and 35.74 ± 0.34 kg respectively. Significant differences between the groups was observed (P<0.05). The yields of mohair of covered and open face Angora goats were 3.67 ± 0.08 and 3.41 ± 0.08 kg respectively. Differences between the groups was significant (P<0.05).
The fineness of fibers, the percentage of stretched lenght, strenght, fibre lenght, ondulation, the percentage of staple and medullated fiber of mohair for the covered face and open face Angora goats were recorded as 38.41 ± 0.60 and 39.81 ± 0.53 microns, 29.68 ± 0.45 and 29.98 ± 0.42 %, 20.82 ± 0.61 and 21.78 ± 0. 70 g, 17.63 ± 0.28 and 17.55 ± 0.33 cm, 7.73 ± 0.18 and 7.24 ± 0.19 number, 0.33 ± 0.10 and 0.53 ± 0.13 %, 0.50 ± 0.17 and 0.53 ± 0.16 % respectively. Variation between the groups was not significant for the criteria related to mohair quality.
Kidding rates were found to be 86 % for covered face goats and 90 % for open face goats. No significant variation was observed between the groups in respect to birth weights of kids, live weights at 6 months of age, and 1 age the yields of mohair.
The number of covered face Angora goats should be in creased in the flock to get higher mohair yield.
