Estimation of Relationship
2 Prof. Dr. Ankara Üniversitesi Ziraat Fakültesi Zootekni Bölümü, ANKARA - The individuals with at Ieast one common ancestor are said to be relatives. The proportion of the same genes descended from the common ancestor in two individuals defines the degree of relationship or coefficient of relationship.
İnbreeding is, then, the mating of relatives which probably results in identical pairs of genes at a locus. The probability that both genes at a iocus are identical by descent is defined as inbreeding coeffcient of an animal. The coefficients of relationship and inbreeding is calculated to ;
a) Be used in some methods of estimation of heritability,
b) Plan and control the mating systems,
c) İncrease accuracy in estimaton of breeding value,
d) Measure the effect of inbreeding on various traits.
This study describes the tabular method in estimating degree of relationship, inbreeding coefficient and additive relationship matrix in addition to short explanation of path coefficient method.
