Postpartum Problems and Mastitis

The first aim for profitable production in dairy cow breeding is obtaining a calf per year. To reach this purpose, the cows need to overcome transition period without any problems and become pregnant again as soon as possible. The second aim is the increasing milk yield. However, there is a negative corelation between these two aims and several fertility problems are more prevalant in high yielding dairy cows. One of the major problem in dairy cows is mastitis, effects economic production negatively. The mastitis incidence increases in paralel with milk yield and several secondary factors occur in the postpartum period increase the mastitis risk. In addition to the genital tract problems seen in the postpartum period, mastitis can extend service period. In this review, the factors affecting fertility such as mastitis and several postpartum problems were mentioned. Also it was aimed to share economic loses caused by these problems and precautions to be taken.
